Top 5 SEO Questions from Photographers

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is the one marketing strategy that most photographers know is important to growing their business. When someone Googles “Family photographer near me” you want to show up FIRST so that they’ll find their way to your website and book. It can happen and when it does, it’s magical.

However, SEO is one marketing strategy that feels the murkiest. It’s confusing and you can quickly feel overwhelmed when trying to figure out where to start. If you’re in the beginning stages of implementing SEO on your website, this is a good place to start. I wrote down the top 5 SEO questions I’m asked and decided to share a blog post with the answers.

Here are the top 5 questions I get asked about SEO:

1) “What IS SEO?”

2) “I’m not tech savvy at all… how can I possibly improve my SEO?”

3) “Blogging is dead to SEO, right?”

4) “I heard from so-and-so that Google changed its algorithm. It’s all completely different now?”

5) "I made some SEO improvements. How long until I see results?”

We’ll walk through these top five SEO questions from business owners and offer ideas for SEO improvements.

5 Common SEO Questions

1. "What IS SEO?"

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the formula search engines follow when ranking search results. You want to make sure your business has great SEO so that you appear number one in Google Results.

Basically, the better you can follow this magical formula, also known as the algorithm, the better your business website ranks in Google. The absolute basic explanation of Google’s Algorithm is making your website more valuable by utilizing the right keywords on your website, adding fresh content regularly, claiming your Google My Business page, and growing your backlinks.

2. “I’m not tech-savvy at all… how can I possibly improve my SEO?”

There are quite a lot of SEO improvements you can make on your online presence without having much technical knowledge.

Define your list of target keywords

Use H1s & H2s on your website pages

Blog consistently

That last bullet leads right into the next question!

3. “Blogging is dead to SEO, right?”

Spoiler alert: NO! Blogging is absolutely not dead at all. Content is still KING in Google’s eyes. Why? Google wants to provide value to its users. There are 7 billion searches on Google every single day and the search engine’s goal is to make sure those searchers get the information they need.

Google (and other search engines) is constantly scanning and indexing websites looking for answers to common searches. One of Google’s key indicators that your website will provide value to its user is if you have fresh, keyword-rich content.

Try to blog at least 1x a month with those juicy keywords.

4. “I heard from so-and-so that Google changed its algorithm. It’s all completely different now?”

Yes, Google recently launched a significant algorithm change. Here’s the thing though, Google frequently makes algorithm changes. Not saying it’s not important to pay attention to major changes, but understand that the search engine’s principles are ultimately the same. Fresh, valuable content that will give searchers the results they want.

Keep up with creating that fresh, valuable content and your website will start to improve its overall web presence!

5. “I made some SEO improvements. How long until I see results?”

Unfortunately, making SEO improvements on your website does not mean instant results. Sure, it would be nice if we could add those target keywords today and see our website appearing on the first page of the search results tomorrow. It’s just not how that works!

Imagine if I decided to suddenly use the keyword “veterinarian” on my marketing website and tomorrow I had pet owners calling me to book appointments. Eek, not good.

Google takes up to 90-days to index your website’s SEO changes. Sometimes it takes longer and sometimes it is shorter to see the changes, but three months should be the target.

After 90 days, you should start to see an increase in organic traffic to your website. This means your website is starting to appear in search results more and more!
