The Dos and Don’ts of Using AI in Your Content Marketing

The day ChatGPT really blew up and was everywhere, I may have cried. I felt like the world was ending for me. If a robot can just write content, WHAT WOULD I LIVE FOR? (Read that in a dramatic flourish and picture me flinging myself on my bed).

Another reason I cried was maybe from the pregnancy hormones.

After I dried my tears and had some chocolate, I processed this new fancy shmancy tool and thought about how I could leverage it.

Also, no, I don’t think AI is taking my job anytime soon. BUT, since you’re here and all nice and cozy, I do want to share a couple of dos and don’ts with you today.

The Dos of Using AI in Your Content Marketing

DO - Use it to get unstuck and moving forward. I’ve talked about Blank Page Syndrome (BPS) here and there. For some people, they open up a blank document, and they simply…. Freeze. They don’t know what to say. Well, AI solves that problem! BOOM, here’s a bunch of ideas for you!

DO - Use it to generate ideas. I had a client ask for parenting tips. Now, I am a parent, but I was drawing a blank. So, I asked ChatGPt for 5 great parenting tips, and it gave a decent answer. I used a few of the tips and ditched two of them. But it got my ideas flowing!

The Don’ts of Using AI in Your Content Marketing

Don’t - Copy and paste!!!!! Do. not. Copy. and. Paste.

Use the copy it generates and tweak it. I have a couple of reasons for you.

Plagiarism - This might not be the right word here, but the truth is that I don’t know! AI gets the copy from…somewhere. It’s read literally hundreds (thousands) of websites across the web. The copy it generates for you is from somewhere else. You can take that copy and mold it to make it yours, but if you just copy and paste, you risk using someone else’s copy!

Not in Your Voice - AI can get smarter and smarter working on your copy, sure. But it’s just not YOUR voice. Make sure you give it a solid read-through and make any tweaks to ensure that it’s you.

Check the Wording - I reading someone’s caption that I’m guessing used AI.. how do I know this for sure? There was a very strange sentence that didn’t seem to have anything to do with the caption.

Don’t - Expect it to Make Your Life Easier

- EEK! I once had a potential client reach out to me. After our call, he was very honest with me that he was going to give using AI a shot instead of investing in my services. Lo and behold, a few months later, he reached back out because he STILL hadn’t written a single blog post. I looked at his website and social media, and it was all exactly the same.

Yes, AI is super helpful, but you still need to plan out what content you need, write and edit, and then upload it where it needs to go. Hey, I’m a business owner, too, and I need to make smart investment decisions, so I totally understand where he was coming from.

Like I said, AI is a tool. You must wield it properly! I hope this helps you with using this tool even better.
